Unpleasant Stat's

There is an interesting story from BusinessWeek last week.  It may displease you.

No matter what we do....there are approximately thirty million Americans driving drunk in an average year.  On top of that.....ten million Americans are driving drugged each year.

Statistically, it's a fairly worrisome number.  On any given day....you could bump into any one of these characters.  It could be in daylight hours or evening hours.  It could be on country roads or interstates.  It could be within a mile of your house or a thousand miles away at some vacation resort in Arizona.  Most of us don't really think about this and it's better that we don't worry.  You could actually live to be seventy-five years old and never be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

My own secret suspicion is that the drug number is actually twice that high if you could legal dispensed drugs which folks are collecting from their doctors and doubling up on.

There is no fear about this business because most folks think they can drive the eight miles back to their house without incident.  In one hundred attempts....they might actually succeed ninety-nine times.  The one accident?  It might be that they just pull into the yard of their home and hit a tree or two.  I knew a guy who pulled into his drive and kept going into the garage until he exited the rear of it (there wasn't a rear but he made one).  I've known folks who pulled into the driveway and just parked....sleeping on the lawn because they couldn't figure out where the house was.

Sometimes, we can laugh about this.  But the truth is that it's serious business and people can die from a simple act of stupidity.  So far....you're living because the statistics are in your favor.

Just An Observation

I am on vacation....in a way....for the holidays....back in Germany.

Two days into this....it snowed eight inches yesterday.  For this local area....they are already up to 20 inches of snow since November.  The curious thing is that from 2007 to 2009....I doubt if we ever had more than four inches in an entire year on average.  And from 2001 to 2007.....never more than six inches.  Must be that global warming stuff.

I sat by the window yesterday....watching snow fall.  It's a comfortable feeling.  You can watch an inch fall in one hour and I think your blood pressure drops by 10 percent.  It's the most relaxing situation that I can think of.
