Just a Curious Story

This is an actual event that occurred up in Glendale, WI this week.  It concerns a domestic episode that boiled over and later led to cops being involved.

This came from the blotter (WORD for WORD):

A domestic dispute that boiled over at a business led to a woman being arrested for disorderly conduct after she used a child as a shield against being Tasered.

According to Glendale police:

A 36-year-old Milwaukee woman was arrested for disorderly conduct/domestic at the service area at Andrew Toyota, 1620 W. Silver Spring Drive, at 12:15 p.m. March 24.

When police arrived, the woman was holding the hand of a child while shaking her finger in the face of her boyfriend, an employee of Andrew, while yelling, "Give me my weed back!"

She struggled with police, refused to give her name and held the child in front of her to avoid being Tasered.

The boyfriend said the two had been living together for a few months but when asked what the woman's last name was said he wasn't sure. He also said he didn't want her arrested but police told him, they had no choice.

There are three key features of the story.  First, there's the gal yelling at the boyfriend over losing her "weed" in front of the cops.  Second, when she met the cops and it got a bit upsetting....she used her kid to avoid the taser.  Third, when the cops finally got around to asking questions of the boyfriend, and he admitted they'd been together for a couple of months....he then admitted that he just couldn't remember her last name.

For me, the last issue is the most curious one.  Most guys will readily admit that after they meet some gal at the local dancehall, pub, bar, disco or whatever....they remember her first name and that's about it.  In fact....they might even be dating the gal for several weeks before they realize that she does have a last name and they write it down in their notepad....just in case this becomes important.  For you ladies who think this is pretty immature, well.....it's the way that guys tries to avoid remembering unnecessary information until its really important.  Sadly, thats the way guys have functioned for two thousand years.

A Little Green Dream

Quietly....ever so quietly, if you gaze around today, there is a little bit of chat over Cash-for-Clunkers version 2.0.

The talk is.....General Motors wants to come up with a tax-payer incentive....to finance folks buying green vehicles.  The amount?  $7500 in terms of a tax credit....to buy GM's one and only battery car....the Volt.

This deal would be hidden inside of a rebate deal to all consumers....at the point of sale.  If you wondering, this would bring the Volt down to $33,500.....plus whatever it costs for you to install your charger in the garage (figure $1,500 for the charger and the electrician costs).

The Volt itself?  So far, I've read most questionable comments over the car.  You need to live in a built-up area.....like inner Atlanta or Arlington or Chicago.  No one talks about battery replacement costs but you have to figure it's over $5k at some point to yank the old batteries out and dispose of them....then replace with new ones.   My belief is that out of one hundred folks who might be in the market for such a car....you might convince three to guy (but their intention was to buy 'green' to start with anyway).  You toss on the $7500?  Well...you might double the three to six folks who might have interest.

And who pays the $7500?  Everyone who had no intention in the first place.  It's kinda interesting how your own tax money would finance this scheme in the end.

Union Trail

Somewhere in the midst of news this morning...is this piece about Wisconsin University professors joining up with the state teachers union.  They really didn't go into alot of details and one would assume that the rank and file professors...the ones who usually just teach....don't know much about this whole union thing.  They have likely signed on with a vague interest and just enough knowledge to make them feel comfortable.

I sat and pondered over this.  It has implications.

Two years in the future....the teachers union folks launch into a strike.  Naturally, the university professors follow them down this path.  All for better benefits.  Joe who is paying for his daughter to attend the state university, and shells out $27k a year for tuition, books, room and board....gets a call from his daughter that things have come to a standstill.  Joe is paying the university his hard-earned money and really doesn't care for this strike business.  Ten days into this, Joe starts to sue the university.  The state folks who run the university and aren't union members are at a loss to fight this in court.  They have to pay Joe $10k for damages to his daughter, and that money comes out of the pot that would pay the professors and university operations.

Another problem, in the midst of October....the teachers union authorizes a strike.  It's the middle of NCAA football season.  Does the Coach who makes $1.6 million a year saddle up and strike as well?  I kinda doubt that.

What about a strike during March?  Would the school basketball team walk out of March Madness and deny its basket ball fans a potential win?

What if the students form up their own union and authorize a strike against the teachers and professors?

This is an odd moment.  For high school teachers....their pay is controlled by the state and county.  It's not an optional deal.  But university professors are totally reliant on parents being willing to pay a tuition cost.  Ten years ago, you might have been lucky and paying around $9k a year for a kid's tuition.  Now?  It's probably up to around $16k a year.  Toss in the books, fees, and living costs for four years and it's almost $100k at a well-known school.   I suspect if professors knew the real end to their paycheck.....they might be shocked.
