"Instead of the triumph of democracy and progress, we got violence, poverty and social disaster — and nobody cares a bit about human rights, including the right to life. I cannot help asking those who have forced that situation: Do you realize what you have done?"
"No one but President (Bashar) Assad's armed forces and Kurdish militia are truly fighting the Islamic State and other terrorist organizations in Syria."
-- Russian head of state Putin at the UN yesterday
Normally, these UN speeches by various heads of state are worthless to watch. I sat and watched both President Obama and President Putin.
President Obama choose some speech delivery method that would be comparable to some luncheon speech and on the big scale of his speeches.....I'd probably give it a marginal two-star rating. To be honest, since 2010.....there hasn't been a single four-star speech given. Whoever was on the staff for 2008 and 2009.....who wrote his speeches....is sorely missed.
Putin put up the big question and everyone is quietly sitting there and realizing the big picture (if they haven't already done so).
If two or three western countries.....like France (who is already there in some part of the mess) and Turkey (maybe).....were to step across the aisle and form some pact over the Syria problem with Assad and Russia.....it would be a major loss of faith in the US policy. But frankly.....what has the policy achieved?
The big problem in Iraq is that they really needed some thug like Saddam in charge.....to ensure the radical Muslims didn't get out of hand. Libya was the same way. They all need some thug who does some bad things.....to ensure a power-balance and no civil war. The same was true in Yugoslavia, and to a degree....it's true in Egypt today.
It's rare that you look over the talk by a Russian and American president, and end up saying that the Russian is right, but this time......he is.
