Stores Story

I sat and pondered over this story.  So the basis of the problem is that theft has escalated around Chicago.....with various grocery operations shutting down.

You might have had three grocery stores within a mile of your place last year, and this year.....none of the three exist.

The problem I see goes to two factors....can you find half-a-billion to fix up a couple of stores to open, and can you stock it to run for a year....without theft occurring?

But then it occurred to me....in a city like Chicago, you'd have management positions to fill in such city-run stores.  Usually, it's either incompetent folks or relatives who end up as managers.....taking bribes or robbing the store themselves.

If they get that far?  Well....I would assume for every hundred dollars spent to fill the store and make a fair profit (5-percent).....you'd probably lose 30 dollars.  So it's a lose-lose-lose situation in the end.

On the list of fifty things that the government (any type) should not provide as a service?  Well....there's that problem as well.  Governments shouldn't be in the football stadium business, or selling booze, or providing free air conditioners.

What'll actually happen?  Increasing factor at work....more grocery stores will shut down.  The few that remain by summer of 2024 in Chicago....probably will have a entry/exit post, with armed guards. I don't think anyone much believes it's a rational idea to sponsor or run city-owned grocery stores.
