(I know a couple of you will be looking up plethora, but it generally means an over-abundance, a glut of folks, or a surplus)
It's not really something that you would have noticed back in the 1980s or 1990s.....people within a group, or a church, or a business, or some discussion assembly...having a moderator.
To be truthful....there probably was a moderator but they tended to just state the starting point of a discussion, and if some guy/gal got absolutely riled-up or incensed....they'd say some calming words, and refocus the chatter in the right direction.
Over the past twenty years....moderating seems to have taken on a new dynamic, and they probably take up a quarter of the whole discussion group....refocusing constantly the group, emphasizing to certain folks that they aren't mind-melting with the purpose of the discussion, and 'pushing' at angles which seem an awful lot like propaganda situations.
What is approaching? I suspect that very quietly....you will start to notice people acting as moderators of the moderator....telling the agenda person that it's time to sit down and let people discuss the topic....without the agenda politics being played out.
