I've come to the point of looking over the stories of crashed UFOs and it occurs to me....travel through space for long periods of time would be hard on any species.
So I think the bulk of all craft crashed....had AI non-human life-forms flying them, and they ran into problem X-Y-Z, which they weren't geared to handle.
Yeah, I'm suggesting the bulk of UFO crashes....are just Artificial Intelligence running amok. This is probably a crew of five AI guys sent out 5,000 years ago and just hit the wrong thunderstorm to descend down into the atmosphere.

* sentient androids, modular, built as part of the structure, zero life-support or atmo required.

Addressing your weather/crash theory, I wonder if other visitors (vendors?, demonstrating some new and improved gizmo?) are behind all this fiddlin' with our particular atmo?
