Today, this demilitarize the police bill came up with Nancy Pelosi. Basically, it would halt and stop all this military gear which ended up in the hands of the police....sometimes 'handed down'.....sometimes bought.
So, you sit and pause over this.
Most all small-town sheriffs and police units....never really bought into this, and occasionally they might have gotten some 'gift' money from Homeland Security to buy tactical gear or vehicles.
But the mass urban police? Run by Democratic mayors and city councils? They went big into the tactical scene. It was their 'projection' toys.
About a decade ago in Georgia....some sheriff went and acquired this massive armor vehicle from the National Guard. He failed to grasp several things. First, it required a full-time mechanic to keep it up and operational (cost item). The broken parts? That amounted to another cost item. To get from the county center to the end-point, if required and return.....almost an entire tank of fuel. At some point about three years into this, the news media began to figure the failures of the tactical vehicle, and it ended up disappearing.
Maybe Pelosi has a point on this. You don't need the police pretending to be Army guys on some South African township 'guard' unit. People actually laugh over the comparison, but if you've been to South Africa....that's the first thing that you generally comment upon, and how US police look less and less like police.
