The $30 Chat

The Los Angeles City Council voted yesterday....12–3 vote to raise the minimum wage for hotel and airport workers to $30 per hour by 2028.

I pondered over this.

Basically, these are jobs were you could be non-school graduates or barely out of high school.

It would bring you to a $4,800 minimum monthly salary by 2030.

However, if you figure in state taxes, fed taxes, health insurance, and social security....taking out the deductions....you'd go home with maybe $2,000 a month.

A one-bedroom place?  Within the city limits.....it's a minimum of $2,000 a month.

On one hand.....you are pricing a $100 hotel room (almost impossible to find these days)  at $150, and airline tickets would have to escalate by $30 minimum....making tourism a  tricky business. On the other hand, staying in LA....makes no sense....even if you were a low IQ guy working at the airport....making $30 an hour.

My guess  at 2040 rates (just 15 years away)?  We will be paying burger-flippers near $60 an hour....for a burger-menu lunch that costs $38, while living in a rental unit that costs $3,000 for ghetto-like 1-bedroom apartment.

I stopped by the invalid shut-in neighbor yesterday.
He had his set tuned to televisionprogramming about smugglers at the airport in Peru.
.
Apparently, Peruvian rule-makers sharpened their favorite Number Two pencil and scribbled a cut-off for carrying cash at us$10,000, so if you have more, you need to prove its legitimacy.
Any math wizards, please, at us$30 an hour, how many hours before you cross the threshold into needing to prove you work in Los Angeles?

I looked up the Peruvian law. So there are 2 lines. First, entering the country and having more than $10,000....you have to go up to the customs guy and show them the money....sign some paperwork to explain 'purpose'. The second law....says if you have over $30,000...even if you have some 'good' reason....the police automatically think you are a money-courier or laundry-money, and they can confiscate the money. Some travel experts point out....with robbery at a high-level...having any cash on you is plain stupid.
