Alabama: Senator Shelby Path

In 2022, Senator Shelby would be coming on re-election.  Current age?  86.

Yeah, the odds are terribly against him running again.  In fact, the odds are heavily in favor of him stacking the deck to retire by the end of 2021, and arranging for his pick.

Who he is suggesting?  Former chief of staff for his office.....Katie Britt.

Never heard of her?  She took up the job of 'President' of the Alabama Business Council around a year ago.

Noticed around the state?  No.  That's her chief problem....she's never held any official elected position....not even a mayor.

The odds here?  I would suggest that Shelby is gone by the end of 2021 (if not earlier) and a deal is made with the governor to bring in Britt.  In the 2022 election, she'll have primary against a minimum of five GOP folks....all with name recognition within the state.  I have my doubts that she can do better than 30-percent of the vote in the primary, and that a run-off will occur, with Britt defeated in the end.

This path of never holding any office and then announcing yourself as a governor or Senator candidate?  It's a problem, and in most cases....it won't work.
